Hello Stephen,
I am sorry to hear of your partner's kidney disease and your stroke in 2017. I am glad to hear you have been recovering well.
Kidney Health Australia does state that not everyone is able to be a living kidney donor. There are a number of conditions that may prevent someone from being a live donor including high blood pressure, stroke and smoking. It would be a good idea for you to speak with your partner's specialist about these issues to determine that they do apply to your situation. The nephrologist would be the best medical specialist to discuss your eligibility with, as they would be able to give you specific reasons why it may not be possible for you to donate your kidney.
Are you still seeing a neurologist? It would also be a good idea to discuss this issue with them as they can give your guidance in regards to the safety of both the procedure and the impact it might have on you following your stroke.
The Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management 2017 do not address how long after a stroke it is safe to have elective surgery. This would be something to discuss with your neurologist.
I hope this information has been helpful. If you would like to discuss this further, you can contact us on StrokeLine and speak with one of the Health Professionals on Ph. 1800 787 653.
Kind regards
Siobhan (StrokeLine)
