Hi,
Thank you for contacting the Stroke Foundation. We are sorry to hear about your dad’s stroke.
Your father can access rehabilitation through a private facility if he has a private insurance. The private insurer will be able to advise on the costs and services covered, and this will depend on the level of cover he has. It would be advisable to contact your Dad’s health fund and discuss the level of support they may be able to provide. Your father can access private services within the home, or enquire about his eligibility at a private rehabilitation facility in the local area. Any private rehabilitation facility will require a medical referral and will assess your father before he is accepted for ongoing rehabilitation.
Regarding the delay in his NDIS application, unfortunately the process is long and sometimes can be frustrating. As the transition to NDIS happens, existing services and supports will continue to be available until eligible people start their plans with the NDIS. You can read more about it here: https://www.ndis.gov.au/people-disability/other-services
I would suggest discussing your father’s NDIS application with the Social Worker on his treating team. They should be able to assist you in confirming the referral to NDIS and the application process. Upon receiving a valid application request, the NDIS should respond within 21 days. An application is not considered lodged until the NDIS has all the information they require to make a decision. It might also be helpful to contact NDIS directly to find out if your father’s application has been received. Their contact number is: 1800 800 110 8am-8pm Monday to Friday.
There is some good information for the NDIS applicant and their friends/family at https://www.ndis.gov.au/participants/planning-process, this website can provide you with information on each step of the journey to NDIS.
It would also be worthwhile to arrange a meeting to negotiate with your dad’s rehabilitation team about establishing some goals and options around his recovery as well as his discharge plan.
I hope this information was useful. If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact us on 1800 787 653 or strokeline@strokefoudnation.org.au
Wishing you well,
Shraeya
