Physical Training Post Stroke

Im am a 30 year old male who had a stroke 2 weeks ago. I had 3 embolic infarcts (left occipital lobe and left cerebellar hemisphere). I have since recovered quite well and been discharged from hospital yesterday. After 3 MRI's, 3 CT's, Halter and a billion other tests it is still unknown what caused my stroke. I am a very physically active person and I want to know when it is safe for me to start really exerting myself in physical training? I do a lot of backcountry snowboarding in high altitude and lots of bike riding and running. I really want to start back doing exercise again but i'm just not sure in what capacity i can push myself and i forgot to ask the doctor before is discharged.

Hi Jake,

 

I'm sorry to hear about your stroke.

Physical activity is an important part of stroke recovery and secondary stroke prevention so it's great to hear you're so keen to get back into your sports. Given that your activities of choice are quite high intensity, I'd recommend first speaking with your neurologist.

Do you know if you have an appointment coming up with the outpatient stroke clinic? Most stroke survivors are booked into one of these clinics approximately 6 weeks after they leave hospital. This would be the best place to ask about returning to sports.

If you don't have an appointment, or if you feel like you can wait until then, speak to your GP.
