HiWalk mobility booster program

Does your walking need a boost after stroke?

HiWalk is a research trial of a physiotherapy-led program to improve walking in people after stroke. It is being conducted by senior researchers from Macquarie, Monash and Sydney Universities.

The program involves attending a rehabilitation gym (see locations below) for up to 3 hours, on weekdays for 3 weeks. It consists of different exercises and activities that target walking, tailored to each participant’s goals and abilities.

Is this project for you?

  • Adult (aged 18 years or older)
  • More than 6 months but less than 8 years after your stroke
  • Can walk 10 metres without assistance
  • Have adequate English language and cognitive skills to participate

Locations are community rehabilitation gyms in:

Sydney – Burwood
Melbourne – Tarneit

Participation is voluntary and involves assessment by a physiotherapist. One group of participants will participate in the HiWalk program. The other group will continue usual activities and will be offered a physiotherapy consultation at the end of the study. The study team will stay in contact with all participants for 6 months.
