Lived experience partner: Music-based virtual reality upper limb stroke rehabilitation
Who it’s for: Survivors of stroke
What it involves: Join a research team
Where: Online (Australia), in-person SA
Summary
Researchers from Flinders University and UniSA are co-designing an upper limb rehabilitation program in virtual reality to improve the quality of life for survivors of stroke. The project will test if combining music and virtual reality can improve recovery outcomes.
Eligibility
- Aged 18 years or older
- Experienced a stroke at least 6 months ago
- Have an upper limb impairment
- Can read and write in English
Activity
Lived-experience partners will be asked to provide feedback about study design (non-technical), share what is reasonable to request/expect from a survivor of stroke participant, and how to most appropriately communicate/provide information to participants.
The research team are keen to learn from different perspectives. The experiences from survivors of stroke who have/haven't used mirror therapy, have/haven't used virtual reality and who are/aren't musicians will all be valued.
The lived experience advisory role involves:
- Providing feedback by email and in project meetings (online or in-person in Adelaide) every 1 to 2 months, until the end of the pilot trial (30 October 2024). Lived-experience partners may opt to stay involved for the duration or part of this time.
- It is preferable for lived experience partners to attend at least one of the meetings to be held in-person in Adelaide, to enable to demonstration, attempted use, and subsequent direct feedback of the virtual reality application.
