So happy for you Robyn! One step closer to school pickups π©π
Thank you Diana. I feel so lucky to have that freedom back.
Hi Robyn, I had my severe stroke at 48 about 17 yrs ago. I also have had 2 heart valve replacements, the 1st a year after the stroke & 2nd May 2019.
I could not of gone on without my driving so I started re-learning how to eat, talk & walk. Then exercise 3 times as much as Physio said, even adding a couple of my own. Then I was allowed back home so I continued the exercises & wished the 6 months with no licence was finished. I already had my GP's approval & my OT had given me the Disabled driver information.
I contacted the Disability Instructor a few weeks prior to the start date & booked in for my lessons. I had several lessons in an adapted car.....a steering wheel knob & left hand indicator switch but I managed the accelerator with my (affected) right foot. The lessons covered everything, like a basic driving test but before I got behind the wheel I had 3 tests.....a Road Rules test then 2 other spoken observations test where you watch a screen of different vehicles at round a bouts & various junctions. Then out on the road to do the test including reverse park & hill start.
Just stay calm, watch your speed & remember what the instructor has taught you. You'll be fine. Then you have your freedom back again. If only I could manage my motorbike??? I'm an ex Paramedic (in the UK but Aussie) so I've done a lot of driving in all conditions. I've just bought a VW campervan & once it's set up for me & my animals, I'll take her out for a weekend or 2.
I wish you all the best but know you will do itππ
