Hey Col, I just want to let you know from another survivor that it absolutely IS possible to drive again even after a major stroke, it might be a little bit different from state to state, and I’m in wa and legally to do it here you have to do lessons and pass a driving test all over again, but i did it and have been driving again for about 7 years now, im just only allowed to drive automatic only, and with a spinner knob tire compensate for my affected side(which is my left-so the spinner knob has controls for the windscreen wipers, indicators, high beam headlights, horn etc) is all. I suggest finding an OT driving school near you and finding out how they can help you get there! I even got a grant that paid tor the cost of the spinner knob equipment and installation through mine.

I went back to driving 4 months after a double stroke.  Exactly happened as Retro said.  I cannot use my right side much.  You just need a medical clearance from the doc and an assessment by an OT authorised by the NSW RMS.  Few hoops to jump through but relatively fuss free.  Car is modified the same as retro's.  Glen

Hi Col, I had a severe stroke 16 years ago & only have limited use of my right side. I had a Disability Trained driving instructor who explained the tests I needed to pass before I tried the driving test. They're designed to test your mental ability, your observations & knowledge. Mine was 15 yrs ago so things might have changed but there wasn't a written test, only the observer test eg: how many trucks in the picture? The Instructor will assess the equipment you will need to add to your car & will instruct you in an appropriate car. I think you need approval from your Specialist before any of this happens. Is there a reason you haven't done one before now? I believe that the NDIS can help with costs if you are aalready with them? Anyway, I wish you all the best. Julie

Meliame: Listen to your body Col, you will know when the time is right, itʻs better to wait and be sure than jump into it only to fail and be disappointed. I got my license back over 2 years after my stroke, which comes with conditions and a steering knob for the wheel, it does give you back independence but you want to be safe as well as others too. My brother is right side hemiplegic he got his licence back with car modifications.

Hi Col,

you are doing the right rehab, Never give up, I am 4 yrs post stroke and just got my ACT licence back, unrestricted.  I had to be assessed by my GP, do a test with OT and driving instructor.  Then wait months for ACT authorities to react.  Finally I wrote email to local transport minister and within a week I had a temporary lic.  Then had to log 10 hrs with licenced driver, and have another OP and Instructor test.  Then I finally got my licence back.  Best of luck.
