Hi Phil, to me, riding your stationary bike is spot on for improvement. Following a stroke 2 years ago, at first I couldn't ride my bike or walk a few steps. Along with a daily range of repetitive balance, strength and mobility exercises, I climbed on a stationary bike for 10 min twice a day or a bit longer if fatigue didn't set in. I found that my legs were improving better on the bike than walking! After 4 weeks on the exercise bike I progressed to scooting along on a mountain bike with the seat lowered and pedals removed for about 20 metres and as often as I could manage each day. Using the brakes (left hand problem) was difficult at first but became more manageable. 3 weeks later and able to steer straight, the pedals went back on with the seat raised and I ventured out onto a quiet pathway. After 3 months I was able to ride slowly with a friend and re-learn the finer points of cycling. 6 months later at the age of 74, I was back on the MTB and road bikes every week and whizzing around with family and friends. It all started with getting on the stationary bike and building up a routine with a goal in mind just as you are doing. Stay determined, push the pedals and keep thinking about taking the MTB to where you love to be. Wishing you great success on your recovery journey.
