Hi ICE,
Have you spoken to your physio about the jerking, Here is the StrokeLine number if you want to give them a call - 1800 787 653 - Diana
Hi ICE, I am sorry to hear of the jerking feelings you are experiencing at the moment and could imagine how uncomfortable it must feel for you. I wanted to start by congratulating you on your goals, they are great goals to work towards. I hope you are managing to walk the 3 kms per day, that's quite a distance.
In regards to the jerking feelings you are experiencing, this can be a symptom some people experience after a stroke and can be related to muscle spasticity. You might like to have a look at our fact sheet on muscle spasticity for more information, you can read it here. We also have a really interesting podcast on muscle spasticity as well. If you'd like to listen to it, you can find it here.
Are you feeling it in a certain part of your body like your arm or leg? I would certainly agree with Diana above, speak to your physiotherapist and let them know what's going on for you. Your physio can design a program that might help reduce the jerking feeling and the tightness associated with that. They can talk with you about specific exercises that can help strengthen other muscles around the area.
I would also mention it to your doctor so that they are aware of these new symptoms. They can talk to you about whether a certain type of medication (botulinum toxin) which is usually referred to as Botox, might be helpful for you. Your doctor may recommend being reviewed by a Rehabilitation Physician to assess your symptoms and design a treatment plan. Some hospitals also have access to a Spasticity Clinic, so depending on where you live, this may be an option for you as well. Talk with your Doctor about this.
Some people can also find some relief with other medications such as specific muscle relaxants. This again would be something you could talk with your Doctor about.
As Diana said above, I would also suggest that you give us a call on StrokeLine, so we can talk with you more specifically about other options that might help. You can call us on Ph. 1800 787 653 and we are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (AEST).
I hope this is of some help, and that you are able to keep up with your walking. Do let us know how you go with your goals, and with seeking some help for the jerking feeling.
Kind regards
Siobhan (StrokeLine)
