That must be so frustrating!! I lost my ability to chew for a while. I learned how to take my time and just breathe. Still having trouble swallowing, but I do my best to take my time and breathe before I try to swallow. I found that reading out loud has helped a lot.
This was one of the many problems I faced in early stroke recovery days, can't remember how I overcame it but even worse for me was biting my cheeks from the inside. This is a problem I had as a child but thought it had gone away.
I overcame it by turning myself away from the table and leaning my head down and twisting to the left, this enabled me to chew the food and digest it. After a few weeks of non damage to my cheeks I was able to return to proper eating.
The whole process was uncomfortable and unsightly and I would put a paper doily on the floor to catch bits that fell out. Fortunate there was only my wife and I to witness it, she understood my problems and baked me to the hilt.

Thanks for your comment Deigh. Those are great suggestions!! I’m expected to make a full recovery, so I’m looking forward to that. I’m getting stronger every day and my swallowing is improving slowly.
