Tendon lengthening surgery

Thank you for reaching out on EnableMe and this is an interesting topic and one that has been raised before.  You might like to have a look at the last post on experience or advice regarding tendon release surgery of the hand here. There were a few people who commented but mainly on the importance of seeking input from your medical team.

It sounds like you have had input from a medical profession such as a surgeon,  but in case you haven’t this is really important to follow up.  Have you also seen an Occupational therapist for hand therapy?  It sounds like you might have had input from a therapist given you have had Botox. If you haven’t it is important that you do seek input from a therapist to work on your grasp and prepare you for any surgery that you may be planning.

Surgery is a major decision and it is always important to ask about benefits and risks associated with this, and the likely expectations and outcomes for your situation. Every person will be different and both the impact of their stroke, and the outcomes of the treatments may vary.  It may be difficult to confirm whether or not the surgery will assist with a return of active movement, but it may assist with pain management associated with your chronic muscle spasticity.

I am sure that there will be others that will comment on your question, and it would be great to hear from those that may have undergone this procedure.

Hi Siobhan, thanks for thet advice, I’m not going to rush into something so permanent as surgery. Have a multidisciplinary assessment session booked soonish. Surgeon, hand therapist, rehab physician etc to assess eligibility and options
